Intro

A pragmatic move to the cloud for police forces

Many UK police forces have been running Oracle’s E-Business Suite to manage their Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) for over a decade. Over its lifetime, the system has become core to these forces’ mid and back office operations, finely tailored through significant investment.

However, this isn’t the full story. The rapid pace of digital innovation and changes in national policing strategy are making forces’ IT departments think twice about what they need to future proof their operations.

Cloud-based applications offer attractive benefits that promise step-change improvements:

The ability to scale up and down, according to demand
Easy updates
Greater flexibility to support agile and mobile solutions

Stability and security ensured over time
Stability and security ensured over time

Cloud-based applications offer attractive benefits that promise step-change improvements:

Accommodating new application feature changes and integrations rapidly isn’t always easy
It can be a challenge to maintain application, database and OS patches
It can be difficult to scale quickly, meaning capacity planning can become burdensome
Managing infrastructure on site is costly
Refreshes are costly, risky and often deferred
It can be hard to deploy new environments quickly

After years of investment in an ERP system integral to their operations, how can police forces overcome these challenges and access the impressive benefits offered by cloud-based working without causing significant disruption to their teams?

Together, Oracle and Sopra Steria have developed a pragmatic, structured methodology for migrating police forces onto Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, with minimal risk and disruption to key operations.

Case Study

Enterprise Resource Planning
fit for a modern police force: Cleveland Police case study

In 2020, Cleveland Police were undergoing a significant amount of change. Oracle E-Business Suite was approaching the end of its support package, a burning platform that was critical to the force’s operations.

Cleveland had to address this, and knew that it was both a local and national strategic imperative to move to the cloud. They needed a practical approach that would achieve this goal while minimising disruption and risk, winning the hearts and minds of 2700 users.

In this video Jo Gleeson, Chief Financial Officer, Ciaron Irvine, Chief Superintendent, and Oliver Plumpton, Head of IT, talk about the force’s decision to work with Sopra Steria to move and improve their ERP system.

The first OCI migration project of its kind in UK policing, Cleveland were able to access a host of benefits and successfully move and improve their ERP system in partnership with Sopra Steria.

Oracle OCI

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure for policing

Ripping up the rule book isn’t possible for busy forces balancing the demands of day-to-day policing with business change programmes. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) offers a practical step towards cloud-based working.

A deep and broad platform of public cloud services that enables customers to build and run a wide range of applications, OCI offers a scalable, secure, highly available and high-performance environment.

OCI is built for organisations seeking higher performance, lower costs and easier cloud migration for their existing on-premises applications, with better price-performance for cloud native workloads.

Traditional, on-premise workloads that enterprises rely on to run their business are easier to migrate to Oracle Cloud. Designed to deliver bare-metal compute services, network traffic isolation and the only service-level guarantees for performance, Oracle Cloud enables rapid migration and faster time to innovation. Organisations can build new value around migrated applications faster with Autonomous Database, data science tools and Oracle’s cloud native development tools.

OCI is designed to protect customer workloads with a security-first approach across compute, network, and storage—down to the hardware. It’s complemented by essential security services to provide the required levels of security for the most business-critical workloads.
